Lorelei Speaks

Lorelei was essentially a mono-lingual Spanish speaker until October 2007. At that time we went with Baby Emma to visit the Munns in Miami. Lorelei seemed to really notice and feel the limitations of communicating with her mono-lingual English relatives (although to be fair - Roger is neither strictly mono-lingual nor was his communication with Lorelei inhibited in the least bit by the spoken tongue.) This event coincided with several other life changes so that Lorelei began to expand her repertoire.

Here are a few of the verbal gems that Lorelei tosses around. I have been remiss in not recording them sooner. Sometimes the humor is in her play between English and Spanish words. At other times it is just word play. And lots of times it is just her inherited 'smart as a whip' honesty that cracks me up.

Lorelei and Emma are recovering from Pink Eye and the four times a day eye drops made a lasting impression on L. On Sunday, her play was filled with needing to put medicine in my eyes every 32 seconds. Trying to stall another dose of drops, I asked if she was a nurse. She told me, "No. I'm a doctor."

I was practicing English with Lorelei while we were enjoying the beautiful weather out on the balcony. I told her, " I love watching you because you are so active and interesting, so animated and friendly." I was internally wondering how much she understood until she added, "and cute."
