We went to my new school to pick up an enrollment transfer paper for Lorelei. That is when she asked and I confirmed that she was going to be switching schools and be with me. She was adamant that she didn't want to go to PAC, although for no particular reason. She just kept saying, "I don't wanna. I don't like it." As I know Lorelei even better than she knows herself, I recognized the anxiety over being in a new school with all new kids and teachers. That is not what she considers an adventure. I decided not to engage with her further because rationalizing wasn't going to change her feelings. She did know that we were headed to buy uniforms. When we arrived she was practically panting and wildly ranting, "I don't know why Mami is here. I already told her I don't want to go to that school!" She was pretty worked up. It was lunch time. I didn't want to chance that hunger was playing into her mood, so we first ate. By the time we finished buying the uniforms, she seemed to have adjusted to the idea.
This is what (I hope) a year's worth of school uniforms for Lorelei looks like. Six short sleeve polos (2 navy, 2 white and 2 light yellow), 5 skorts, 1 pair of navy pants and a navy sweater. Last year I bought five bottoms and five tops for the entire year. The bottoms held up really well and still look great. The shirts are now for painting because they are all stained, so I am expecting that I might need to purchase additional shirts mid-year. So I am trying to decide, is $150 a reasonable value for clothing Lorelei every school day for 9 months? We certainly won't need to be purchasing many other clothes for the weekend. Her waist isn't getting any bigger, so the shorts and skirts just keep getting shorter on her!
The actual shopping process took forever. I felt like I was in Argentina because it was a lot less self-serve and a lot more relying on a salesperson to pull the pieces and change the sizes. Having said that, they lady that was helping us was very nice and attentive, but Sabrina was running around the store getting into everything while Lorelei was trying on the different clothes. It took a while before we found a pair of pants that would fit her waist and leg length. Once we finished I had to wait with a totally crazy squirming Sabrina that didn't like being contained for a good long time to pay. I was squarely back in Miami. I was about to blow my top, too. I paid and then we had to leave the clothes to be embroidered with the school logo/name. The above is my favorite. It is on her sweater. The rest of the clothes are far more subtle.
Rather than spend another tense 30 minutes waiting in the store with the crazy kids, we went next door to the Dollar Tree. First I put Sabrina in a shopping cart. (She may only weigh 20 pounds, but 20 pounds of squirm tires out my arms pretty quickly!). I gave Emma and Lorelei each one dollar and told them that they could pick out whatever they wanted - excepting a food item. It was one of the best half hours ever. The girls covered the entire store checking out everything first and making their decision. In the end Emma bough a little set of plastic make-up, nail polish, clippers and long finger nails. Lorelei selected a similar set but the hairstyling set with a curling iron, brush, barrette and something else.
